Sustainable Energy for Rwandans: UR-ACEESD, EPD sign pact for human capital development in Energy Sector.

On 6th October,2020 the University of Rwanda (UR) through the African Centre of Excellence in Energy for Sustainable Development (ACEESD) and Energy Private Developers Associations (EPD) agreed to partner in the development and dissemination of energy technologies as well as institutional building and human capital development in energy sector.

This partnership will help ensure long-term sustainability and continuity of Energy sectorial development, professional, technical training and research at tertiary level should be given high priority.

The signed MoU between Energy Private Developers Association (EPD) and University of Rwanda (UR) through its African Centre of Excellence in Energy for Sustainable Development (ACE-ESD) proposes Capacity Building through education as a strategy towards Sustainable Energy Development.

“We are trying to build abilities, public private professional relationships and values that will enable both institutions (UR&EPD), researchers, younger innovators, businesses and individuals to improve the affordable and performance of energy systems in an efficient and environmentally benign manner”, said Sanday KABAREBE, Chief Executive Officer, at Energy Private Developers.

Sanday further observed that capacity building in the energy sector is still needed and that the teams from EPD and UR-ACEESD will work together to come up with approaches that would address this shortage.

This partnership will see joint activities being implemented ranging from short course trainings in energy-related technologies, staff exchange, public outreach and information sharing among others.

The Vice Chancellor of UR, Prof. Philip Cotton noted that academic institutions are at the centre of capacity building in sustainable energy development and the success will depend on consorted and collaborative effort by all key stakeholders. He hopes that this MoU will not be kept in the book shelve only but rather hopes to see actions being taken by both institutions.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by the Acting Director of Africa Centre of Excellence in Energy for Sustainable Development (ACE-ESD), Dr. Charles KABIRI and the Project Analyst at EPD Rwanda, Mr. Serge Wilson MUHIZI.
