E-RESOURCE TRAINING TO PHD STUDENT AT THE CENTER OF ENERGY FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT (ACE-ESD)

A 2 day training workshop was organized by the center of excellence in Energy for Sustainable Development  ACE-ESD) in collaboration with College Library getting training facilities from Swedish International Development Cooperation SIDA project.

The training started on Wednesday 8th and continued Thursday on 9th November 2017 in the KIST ii building on the 5th floor in the computer Laboratory.

The training was tailored in way that provides an interactive atmosphere for participants to contribute to their own learning and greatly benefit from the training.

  1. Objectives of the Training

The overall objectives of this training were as follow

1. To advocate for and create   awareness of e-resources available for the UR community (Staff and students)

2. To provide UR students and staff with the competences and skills required to use e-resources for teaching, learning and research.

3.  To empower   UR community to conduct, write and present literature reviews as well as cite correctly and efficiently.

  2. Expected Learning outcomes:

 By the end of this course, the students and staff should be able to:

  Identify and use e-resources for teaching, learning and research

 Construct search strategies and perform effective searches

 Conduct, write and present literature reviews

 Use Mendeley to cite and manage references.

Main Introduction.

The trainer Dr. Robinah Namuleme started by introducing herself to the training participants who later also introduced themselves to know each other so that the training can be conducted amongst people who have been introduced to each other.

The main Facilitator of the training was also being facilitated by Ms. Mukarubayiza Benilde and Ms. Murebwayire Alice who were her co-facilitators and all coming from Library department.

The facilitator introduced to them the importance of the training mostly to students who are more interested in research.

The training involved practical and relevant examples given to the training participants as people who will be involved in research and the also gave their input on how to approach a given statement of the problem that must be researched about.

The training attracted many PhD students and even some staff of the related offices in the center.

The training was very much interactive among the training participants and the facilitators.

In the due process the training also had some facilities that would make it be run in a more organized and harmonious way ie coffee break and refreshments and lunch

As the participants continue to be trained, they were given some practical exercise which made more active and having hands-on skills to better equip them.

After the training the participants were also given an opportunity to ask questions or give an advice on how next similar workshops can be conducted in a better way or if there is anything bserved it was a time to share it all together.

Some suggestions/recommendations from the workshop participants

Workshop participants were very much thankful to the Center of excellence in Energy for Sustainable Development and the Management of College Library which organized such important workshop that gave them some of the important highlights research and innovation process. Therefore, trainers made some recommendations to make trainings or workshops more successful.

  1. Get together ceremony in order to better know each other and create a better academic conducive environment amongst themselves since they all belong to different countries and background.
  2. Campus tour during orientation even to know the Headquarters of University of Rwanda including highlights of administrative structure of UR
  3. To be facilitated during orientation week to know some important sites in Kigali city, ie Kigali Genocide memorial, some Ministries , Embassies etc……….
  4. If the training would end with a ceremony of issuing certificates of participation to the participants.

 

The facilitator Dr. Robinah also concluded her training thanking everyone that attended and even promised to keep training them whenever is contacted in time and fix according to her busy schedule and convenience. Though she insisted on being facilitated in order to be able to deliver to the expectations.
